Glaucoma is a disease that affects up to 3% of the population in the Western World. It is known as the thief of sight because up to 50% of those with the disease do not know they have it.
The disease causes thinning of the nerve fibre layer in the retina and over time results in characteristic gradual loss of vision and if untreated, can lead to blindness.

|
With our comprehensive test, to help check for glaucoma we offer a full field of view examination and retinal photography. Further to this, we are now pleased to offer The GDx Glaucoma detection programme.
Glaucoma can affect people of all ages and races but those most at risk are:-

People over the age of 40 |
| › |
People of African or Caribbean origin |

Anyone with high eye pressure |
| › |

This diagnostic instrument can pick up any nerve fibre layer loss before any reduction of vision has occurred.
The GDx is a quick, easy and safe test that uses an invisible, low powered laser to scan the nerve fibre layer. This is initially compared to a database of normal patients and then, upon subsequent visits, to your own previous results to give a comprehensive view of whether there is any nerve fibre loss.
|
|
|
 |
The complete test takes around five minutes, with the scan itself taking less than a second. It is completely stress-free; all you have to do is look into the instrument while you are being scanned.
Currently it is the only one available in Essex and is not covered by our comprehensive or NHS eye examination.
